How Teens Can Make Money

Written by Anna Lempereur for Gaebler Ventures

Too old for lemonade stands but too young for office work? Here are some ideas of how teens can make money in a fun, efficient way.

Babysitting

Teens ranging from eleven to nineteen tend to enjoy babysitting because while they’re getting paid while they can participate in leisurely activities.

Although babysitting can require tedious work like cooking dinner, persuading kids to do their homework, and getting them ready for bed, there’s fun involved as well.

While babysitting, it is always important to ensure that the children are entertained. Nice weather is a gift where the possibilities are endless – swimming, playing ball, Frisbee, roller skating, hopscotch, and many other activities where kids stay entertained for hours. Teens should participate in these activities with the kids as well instead of just sitting and watching, so the relationship between the children and the babysitter will grow. Rainy weather can be tricky, since the entertainment is limited to indoors. Prepare a rainy day kit with games, puzzles, coloring books, stickers, and other toys to make sure the kids will have fun inside the house. .

Knowledge of safety is necessary, and teens should always be prepared for emergencies. Children should be supervised at all times. A babysitter should always have emergency numbers for the parents, along with a First Aid kit. .

Housework.

There is a variety of housework that teens can do for the elderly, or adults who don’t have the time to do them. Cleaning is a great and easy way to make some extra cash – sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, making beds, doing laundry, and numerous other chores can be arranged. Make sure you are familiar with where the cleaning supplies are in case there is no one in the house to direct you. Be careful while cleaning near fragile items or anything that may break easily. .

Yard work is also a fast way to make money. Mowing the lawn and gardening give teens a chance to work while being outside in the nice weather. Be sure that you have a clear idea of the type of care that each plant needs, such as how much to cut and water them. .

Craft Making.

Making crafts is a leisurely way to make money, and can be done while spending time with friends or watching television. Head to your local art supplies store to get an idea of what kind of craft you want to make – jewelry, scarves, decorations, and stationary are popular items that can be made with ease. Instruction books can be found that will explain how to make the craft of your choice in step-by-step instructions and give you ideas of different ways to make it. .

Teens can sell their crafts to classmates or teammates, and even put them on the web with parental permission. Websites like Etsy.com are great places to sell handmade items to consumers who are looking for something unique.
