According to the survey of 6,107 people who rated 103 chains, the typical American who responded said they eat at a restaurant chain at least 11 times per month.

Coming in on top of the survey's "mega-chain" category was Wendy's, which Zagat says lived up to its motto of "waaaaaay better than fast food."

But in what may be a shock, especially to people on the east coast, In-N-Out Burger was voted the best "large chain" despite having locations in only Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. The west coast burger stop also was voted best burger.

Of course it's not a survey about fast food chains without mentioning McDonalds and according to the survey the golden arches comes in as the winner of the best French fries along with taking home the prize for best breakfast sandwiches, most child-friendly, best drive-thru and best value.

In terms of popularity, Subway topped the mega-chain list, which is fitting given it was listed as the top franchise by Enterprise magazine last December.
