Advice on Franchises

Secrets to Franchising Success

Written by Anna Lempereur for Gaebler Ventures

Starting a franchise is difficult, especially without knowing the basics. These secrets will not only show you how to run a successful franchise, but also how to grow as fast as the pros do.

Many entrepreneurs choose to open franchises because it is a fast way to make a business successful.
(article continues below)

However, not all businesses are cut out to become franchises. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a franchise business.

Franchise Marketing

Be sure that the franchiser can effectively get the word out for your business. Aim high – regional and national ad campaigns will most definitely get your company's name out to the public. Although this type of marketing is highly effective, it is quite costly. Franchisers should be sure to use a good portion of sales for advertising – it will pay off in the end.

Franchise Training

It is essential to know the necessary steps in running a franchise, and franchisors vary in the level and amount of guidance they provide when it comes to operating a franchise. Many franchisers offer training programs that aim to help entrepreneurs keep successful franchises. Choose a franchiser with an established training program, so you can learn these techniques from the head office. These programs specialize in helping entrepreneurs grow their franchised businesses, so what you can learn from them will be extremely useful in the long run.

Franchise Quality Control

When owning a franchise, you should always be sure each branch can deliver the highest level of quality. If the iced lattes from the Starbucks in New York City taste different than the iced lattes from the Starbucks in Philadelphia, something is wrong. Consumers expect the same quality from each branch, no matter where the location is. To the customer, all Starbucks are the same, even though they have completely different employees. It is important to maintain that high quality that will keep consumers coming back for more.

Franchise Fit

Carefully choose a franchise that fits your personality, skills, and knowledge. Many fast food franchises are known to be successful, but that does not necessarily mean that if you start a fast food franchise, yours will be successful also. Sit down and brainstorm to decide which franchise is your perfect match. Not only must you be an expert in your franchise, but you must enjoy it as well. Do not choose a franchise just because you saw it become successful elsewhere. Some franchises are not right for everybody, and it is important to choose a franchise that is right for you.
