Starting a Beauty Salon

Written by Rayzelle Forrest Young for Gaebler Ventures

If beauty has been a passion of yours and you're thinking about starting your own business, why not start a beauty salon. Since people are obsessed about their appearance and probably always will be, this can be a lucrative business to go into.

The business of beauty is a multi-billion dollar business.

A beauty salon differs from a hair salon in that it encompasses all aspects of beautifying yourself. This means hair, nails, and skin care. Providing these services all in one stop as opposed to starting a separate hair salon or nail salon allows you to take advantage of a wider range of customers. There may be a person who insist on getting their hair done but doesn't really care one way or the other about their nails. Or it could be vice versa where a person loves to get their nails done but does their own hair. In either of those cases, a full service beauty salon can accommodate both types of client. Here is what you'll need to do to start your own beauty salon.

Evaluate Abilities

Evaluate your abilities to see what it is you can offer to the business. Do you want to be the owner as well as one of the employees? If so do you have the necessary licenses required to work in the salon. If not, you will need to get licensed beauty technicians to do this work for you. If working in the salon yourself is something you want to do then you can acquire the proper licensing while other technicians work in the salon.

Hire Beauty Technicians

There are always beauty technicians that are looking for work. The best way to find them is to put classified ads online. Craigslist.com is a great place to do this because of the millions who browse this site per day for employment opportunities.

Select A Location

Typically it is good to select a location with a high traffic area. Good places to look for available space are in strip malls. These areas usually get a lot of traffic because of the variety of merchants leasing buildings. Every person that shops in the strip mall is a potential customer. They will see your business every time they do business in the area.

Obtain Proper Permits, Licensing and Insurance

You will definitely need to get a business license. This can be done down at your local city offices. The business license department will also give you information about what type of other permits and insurance you will need in order to get your beauty salon up and running.

Once you have done all these things you are ready to launch your beauty salon. Market your business with flyer, postcards, direct mail marketing and a website in order to get customers. Make sure you start your marketing efforts at least 2 months in advance of your grand opening. The good thing is, unless all the technicians you hired are new to the business then they probably will come with their own set of customers.
