Selling a Stainless Steel Business

Many business leaders say that now isn't the time to try to sell a stainless steel business. At Gaebler, we think it's a great time to sell a stainless steel business. Here's why . . ..

Business sellers sometimes face a long, hard struggle to get fair market value for their companies. But with the adequate preparation, your stainless steel business can attract buyers who recognize its potential.

Although it takes hard work and dedication, if it's time to exit your stainless steel business there is a good chance you can sell it for a good price -- even in today's market.

Broker vs. No Broker

When selling a stainless steel business, you have two choices: Hire a broker to facilitate the sale or perform the sale unassisted. Business brokers typically charge a 10% "success fee" when they sell a business, but they also handle many of the hassles that are associated with selling a stainless steel business. You can also expect to receive a higher sales price for your business in a broker-assisted deal.

Understanding Market Timing

Now may be the best time to sell a stainless steel business. With interest rates at all-time lows, it's easy to see why stainless steel businesses are an appealing investment opportunity for savvy investors. As the interest rates rise, it will be more difficult for buyers to make the numbers work in their favor. So we see market timing as a concern that can be easily mitigated by applying fundamental sales strategies and adequately preparing your company for buyers.

Buyer Concessions

Sellers aren't the only ones who can make concessions in a business sale. In many instances, sellers can request buyer concessions. Often, buyer concessions represent financial incentives that the seller receives in exchange for providing a non-cash benefit (e.g. training, financing, etc.. Asset exclusions, retained ownership shares and long-term contracts with another of the seller's companies can also be leveraged to extract concessions from buyers.
