Telecom Franchises

Looking for telecom franchises? You've come to the right place! We discuss a few things to consider before buying telecom franchises. We've also highlighted a few telecom franchises that we like.

Over the past several decades, the demand for wireless telecommunication services has grown at an exponential rate as cellular, paging and other emerging wireless communication services have become widely available and increasingly affordable.
(article continues below)

Technology, consumer preferences, and changing telecommunications regulations have helped make cellular service a $100+ billion industry in the U.S.

In addition to the big cellular companies, several small businesses and franchisors have taken advantage of the demand for wireless products and services. These businesses serve as outlets for wireless service, and offer a complete range of wireless products and accessories. The success of many of the businesses and franchises in the telecom industry can be attributed to their ability to adapt to changes in technology and consumer demand.

Wireless Toyz is a perfect example of franchisor that has demonstrated an ability to adapt its product line to changes in the marketplace. Founded in 1995, Wireless Toyz initially generated almost 95% of its revenue from the wireless paging industry.  But the telecommunications industry soon turned in a new direction, away from pagers to wireless phones. Wireless Toyz anticipated the emerging trend by making cellular products and services their core offering.  They continued to adapt to changes in the industry and have become one of the major franchisors of cellular products and services.

Due to the heavy technological focus of this industry, it is critical to choose a franchisor (e.g. Wireless Toyz) that can adapt to advances and changes in consumer demand. Ask potential franchisors for concrete examples of how they adapted to the marketplace and inquire about how they plan to do so going forward.

Points to Consider

  • The telecommunications industry is highly competitive, requiring business owners to aggressively market their products. When researching potential franchisors, make sure to ask about the marketing support they provide their franchisees.
  • Although you don’t need to be a technology expert to own a wireless telecom franchise, a basic understanding of current technology certainly helps. Browse products at a few cellular retailers to get an idea about the current products and technology.

Franchise Opportunities

  • Wireless Toyz. Since 1995, Wireless Toyz has offered consumers a range of wireless communication products. They currently report 60+ locations in the U.S. with 100 more in development.
  • Wireless Dimensions. Wireless Dimensions has achieved success by providing customers with wireless products including a complete line of custom wireless accessories. They report 140+ franchises located exclusively in the U.S.
  • Yakety Yak. Yakety Yak offers a wide selection of wireless communications products from leading providers. In just a few years, the company has grown to 20 locations and has sold another 110 franchise licenses, increasing its reach to 21 states.
