Starting an Online Media Firm

Interview with Veotag, Inc Co-founder Jeff Paul

Jeff Paul co-founded Veotag, Inc in 2006 with the goal of helping other companies better manage their online media.

Veotag helps companies better manage how they use online media. Jeff Paul shares his entrepreneurial story.

Tell me about your current business. What are you doing exactly?

Veotag, Inc helps organizations make online media (video / audio / archived web presentations ) easier to find / share / watch / listen and interact with.

What were you doing before this, and is this your first business?

The principals of Veotag have spent the last 20+ years building / selling / supporting enterprise software.

Where did you get the startup money?

Veotag was self funded from the initial partners.

Who are your main competitors? How do you compete against them?

Our main competitors are in large budget internal video departments and IT departments.

How has your experience in running the business been different from what you expected?

I thought we would have a harder time finding early adopters. We have been very fortunate to have found a good group of early paying customers that have been very generous with their ideas and support for helping us build out the Veotag platform.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently?

I wish we had moved out earlier with a bigger marketing budget.

What have you done that has been very effective in helping to grow the business?

We have offered our customers the opportunity to rapidly see how the Veotag offering can have an immediate impact on how they communicated with employees, customers, prospects and investors by making their media easier to search / watch / discover and share.

What advice would you give to somebody else who wanted to start a similar business?

Be generous with your early adopters. They are the key to your messaging, positioning, product strategy and support requirements.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Jeff!
