The popular franchise's sales were boosted by its McCafe line of coffees.

While there has been plenty of hardship for small businesses in this economic climate, it has been good news for entrepreneurs who are franchisees of McDonald's as the company reports global sales rose 5.1 percent last month.

McDonalds Sales Rising

According to company figures, this 5.1 percent increase included a 2.8 percent rise in the U.S. which the fast-food chain attributes to the introduction of its McCafe line of coffees and the sale of the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit and Sandwich which started last year.

McDonald's CEO Jim Skinner said the figures show that the company remains a top choice for consumers around the world.

"May's strong performance tells us that customers around the world continue to choose McDonald's for the convenience, menu choice, quality and value we offer," he said. "Our focus on the customer and alignment around the Plan to Win are driving our ongoing success."

This month also brought good news for entrepreneurs who are McDonald's franchisees as the chain took home top honors from Zagat in its survey of fast food. The survey found that the golden arches rated top in best french fries along with taking home the prize for best breakfast sandwiches, most child-friendly, best drive-thru and best value.
