Despite murky jobs reports, private employment figures for SMBs experience a gain of nearly 300,000 jobs from November to December.

While recent news for small business owners continues to be mixed, employment statistics are definitely showing upward momentum - at least in the private sector, that is.

According to ADP's National Employment Report, private sector employment, which consists primarily of small and medium-sized businesses, increased by 297,000 jobs from November to December.

In fact, small businesses increased employment by 117,000 and medium-sized businesses added 144,000 in December, the research reports.

"Employment growth has accelerated over the last few months. The recent decisions by our nation's policymakers to extend and enact tax cuts for the short-term are positive, but more can be done. The new Congress has a great opportunity to support ongoing job creation by enacting tax policies and creating business incentives that together will encourage businesses to invest and expand," said Gary C. Butler, president and CEO of ADP.

A separate report, the Intuit Small Business Employment Index, showed slightly different results, finding that small business employment grew by 0.3 percent in December.
