New research found SMBs are not taking the necessary precautions to safeguard their company data and digital accounts. This can harm their relationship with consumers and clients, as well as leave the company vulnerable to cyber attacks.

A recent study from Newtek Business Services and The Small Business Authority recently found only 27 percent of small business owners have an outside party test their computer systems to ensure they are safe from cyber attacks, with 73 percent leaving their company data vulnerable to hackers. The data also showed 39 percent of small business owners do not back up their data in more than one location.

In addition, the study found 35 percent of small businesses have been denied access to their information due to a natural disaster or storm, illustrating the need for data to be backed up on numerous locations for safety. Barry Sloane, president and CEO of The Small Business Authority, said recent data breaches at major corporations should highlight the need protection of confidential business information in small businesses as well as large enterprises.

"Our survey demonstrates that very few business owners have taken a necessary precaution of having a professional data security firm perform a current assessment of vulnerabilities on their commercial website or database applications," Sloane said. "We believe that small to medium sized business owners need to review all aspects of their data security and disaster recovery efforts."

It is important that a company's website and social media accounts are secure as well, as consumers and clients will only want to do work with businesses that can safeguard their information. Entrepreneur reported that it is important to protect all digital information, as social media accounts and websites can help small businesses brand their product or service, increase their search engine optimization and provide consumers and clients with unique information and content.
