Good Church Formation Advice

Starting a Unity Church

You've decided to open a Unity church. Now what? Getting started can be intimidating, but we're here to help.

Wondering how to start a Unity church? We take you step-by-step from start to success.

What is the Unity Church?

Rather than using terminology commonly employed by many religious denominations, the Unity Church describes itself as a spiritual approach or movement. Specifically, Unity calls itself "a positive, practical, progressive approach to Christianity based on the teachings of Jesus and the power of prayer."

Although the Unity Church was founded by Christians, it honors a plurality of faith traditions and sees value in multiple spiritual/theological systems. At their core, Unity churches place a strong emphasis on healing and personal wellness. Unity ministers are granted ordination through Unity Worldwide Ministries (a.k.a. the Association of Unity Churches International) -- a prerequisite for religious entrepreneurs interesting in planting a new ministry in the Unity tradition.

Advertising a New Unity Church

As your new Unity church gets rolling, you'll want to look for ways to announce your presence to people in the community. Eventually, advertising and PR campaigns will be needed to raise your church's profile and establish your ministry's leadership role in the local community. But for most Unity churches, the first promotional step is a great church sign.

Business signage is an issue that entrepreneurs have wrestled with for years. A good church sign not only has to be visible, attractive, cost-effective and compliant with municipal codes -- and in many instances, juggling these variables isn't easy. For more information about signage issues in your community, informally audit other church signs in your area and contact the municipal authorities about sign regulations.
