Westinghouse Electric Company will use the ARPA-E HORNIG programme funding to support the continued research, development and advancement of its PowerBlock� advanced nuclear fuel technology. The funding will help improve traditional nuclear fuel assembly designs through innovative fuel architectures and advanced manufacturing techniques, with the objective of achieving 24-month fuel cycles at thermal power levels above 4,200 megawatts. The project will also generate essential technical data to evaluate future commercial deployment opportunities, improve nuclear fuel performance, increase operational flexibility, and help utilities maximize electricity generation while improving plant economics and efficiency.
