Good Niches for Web Publishers

Web publishers are always looking for profitable niches that the competition may have overlooked. Here are some tips for finding lucrative content niches.

Internet publishing is a growing industry with new entrepreneurial opportunities emerging everyday.

The most successful web publishers are the ones who approach the task with the same intentionality and enthusiasm that characterizes the best small business owners. To make it in web publishing, you need a strategy that leverages your strengths and new opportunities in the online marketplace.

Although some web publishers take a broad approach to site content, many discover that a niche strategy has a bigger potential payoff. Why? Because niche content sites are more focused than broad content sites, enabling the publisher to achieve higher search engine rankings around a handful of keywords. The downside is that niche sites appeal to a small overall audience. But if you select the right niche, it's possible to achieve high site traffic by dominating a corner of the online marketplace.

In the end, it all comes down to finding the right niche for your Internet publishing venture. Good niches for web publishers are out there the trick is to identify the ones with the most potential for traffic and revenue-generating activities.

  • Evaluate your publishing strengths. No matter how ripe a specific niche is for a new web publishing venture, eventually you're going to have to produce content for the site and navigate its nuances in the marketplace. If you know absolutely nothing about the niche, you really have no business targeting it as a web publishing prospect at least not until you get up to speed.
  • Identify market opportunities. After you've established your general publishing interests and personal strengths, start surfing the Internet to see what's already out there on your topic. As you narrow down the list of potential niches, evaluate the competition based on keyword research and bid valuations through Google's Adsense and Yahoo's Overture programs.
  • Develop a target audience. In niche publishing, it's critical to precisely understand your target audience. For example, let's say you have your heart set on publishing a site about weddings. That's a fairly broad category, so you then decide to narrow the focus and settle on a niche site about wedding planning. Is your target audience brides or wedding planners? There's a big difference and your target audience will have implications for both your content and your revenue strategy.
  • Consider affiliate programs. Affiliate programs pay websites who direct traffic to their sites and products. Evaluate the number of affiliate programs that exist for potential niches to gain realistic estimates of affiliate revenue for budgeting purposes.
