Starting a Deliverance Church

What constitutes a "deliverance" church?

Many churches throughout the U.S. include the word "deliverance" in their church name. In general, deliverance churches tend to be independent, full gospel churches with a membership that is primarily African-American. The inclusion of the term deliverance in the church's name usually refers to an emphasis on Christ's power to deliver followers from sin, circumstances and even demonic influences.

Deliverance churches are independent and self-governing, so starting a deliverance church won't require approval from denominational leaders. However, given the fact deliverance churches tend to be closely tied to a local community, it's important to network with other ministry leaders in your area before, during and after your church launch for support and encouragement.

Reasons for Starting a Deliverance Church

Many religious entrepreneurs get so caught up in the excitement of a church startup that they never adequately evaluate whether or not their community needs a new deliverance church.

Desire and passion alone are not good enough reasons to pursue a church startup. Unless there are no other deliverance churches in your locale or spiritual needs that aren't being met, the community may not be as enthusiastic about your new church as you are.

At a minimum, you'll want to create a church startup plan that includes a clearly defined "target market" for your church. If you invest adequate time and energy in the creation of your church startup plan, the probability of your church's success will increase dramatically because you will equip your organization with information about optimal locations, effective promotional strategies and community demographics.
