This will more than likely include ladders, buckets, rollers and brushers, paint coveralls, painters tape, etc. Any job can be done much easier and faster when you have the right tools for the job. Painting is no exception to this rule.
Acquire Adequate Transportation
If you don't already have a pick, van or suv then you will probably need to get one. You need a vehicle large enough to carry your paint supplies in. In the beginning, if your budget doesn't allow you to purchase a vehicle, you can always opt to rent one. If you take this route make sure you get the long term rental rate. This rate is usually cheaper than the regular one.
If you do use your own vehicle of purchase a new truck, consider the benefits of getting a car wrap. Check out our article on how to get a car wrap.
Apply For Licenses
Go down to your city office and apply for the necessary business licenses and whatever others you need to get. This will need to be done before you begin any job. The last thing you want to do is start a business only to have it shut down because you didn't have the proper licensing.
Apply For Workers Compensation
By law you are required to apply for Workers Compensation in the state that you work in. Your payment will depend on how many employees you hire. This process can be done online at workers compensation.com or it can be done through the mail.
You will need to purchase at least liability insurance for you and your staff. This will protect your finances in the event that at accident occurs and there are damages to customer's properties. It also looks good to customers when you have it because they can rest assured that if an accident does happen, their property will be repaired.
Hire as many employees as you think your business will need in order to be successful. Make sure interviews are conducted as well as background checks. Running a background check will require the pre-approval of the employee. You can get this by simply having them sign a release. Your local police station will do the background check for you for a small processing fee. You can now even perform a background check yourself online for a fee. Just google "background check" and use one of the sites that pop up.
Acquire An Office
In the beginning stages of your business, you may or may not want to acquire office space. This will depend on how much business you have and how fast you plan your business to grow. All you need is a small office space to begin with and then you can work your way up to a bigger one as you acquire more business.
The only thing that is left to do for your home painting business once you have done all the above is to advertise. This step can actually be taking place while in the process of taking care of all the other steps. Make use of flyers and business cards and whatever other marketing tools your budget will allow. The success of your home painting business will be largely due to how well you market it so don't take this step lightly.
