Thinking about opening a Metropolitan church? We tell you what you need to know to get started.

The Metropolitan Community Church

The Metropolitan Community Church (also known as the MCC church or the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches) is a relatively young mainline, Protestant denomination with a specific emphasis on reaching out to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) believers.

Although each Metropolitan church is self-governing with the ability to hire their own pastors from the ranks of ordained MCC clergy, there are established denominational structures and a tri-annual General Conference at which the entire church gathers to address issues the denomination is facing.

Given the MCC's small denominational footprint (there are currently 250 MCC congregations around the world), church planting efforts are encouraged. However, prospective MCC church planters need to adhere to proper MCC ordination and church planting procedures. For more information, contact a MCC denominational staff representative.

Metropolitan Church Startup Mistakes

Like any other new organization, MCC church startups are susceptible to a variety of startup mistakes. Sometimes, even seemingly positive developments can have a negative impact on your church's long-term survival. For example, if it isn't handled properly, rapid growth can overwhelm your organization and cause current members to run for the exits.

To get your church started on solid footing, we advice new Metropolitan church planters to take a look at our "Top Three Mistakes New Religious Organizations Make". Although you'll still make (and learn from) some mistakes, we'll help you avoid the kinds of mistakes that can have a catastrophic effect on your new church.
