Commercial Hygiene Franchises

We look at the top commercial hygiene franchises. Cleaning bathroom facilities may not seem like the best way to make a living, but if that's what everybody else thinks, then odds are these commercial hygiene franchise opportunities are worth checking out. Let them go buy a coffee franchise and go broke. You'll make money cleaning up long after they're gone.

Remember the last time you pulled off the freeway to use a public rest area?

Hopefully the bathroom facilities weren't filthy and disgusting, but clean and bright - as if someone had recently given the place a thorough cleansing. Chances are that someone was one of the many commercial hygiene franchisees now dotting the consumer landscape.

The success of commercial hygiene franchises can be attributed to a number of factors. First, these franchises offer a service most people would rather not perform themselves. Everyone likes to have a clean public restroom when they need it, but very few people actually want to do the cleaning. Combined with the fact that a dirty facility can create a negative public perception, businesses and other organizations have turned to commercial hygiene franchises to make their restrooms sparkle.

Swisher Hygiene is an example of a company that achieved success through specialization in commercial hygiene. They company began in 1986 based on a hunch that that businesses would welcome the opportunity to have their facilities cleaned and maintained by hygiene professionals. That hunch paid off and today they not only offer commercial hygiene to more than 60,000 businesses across the U.S., but commercial pest management services as well.

Points to Consider

  • Commercial hygiene franchises provide services for an exclusively commercial clientele. That means that your business will succeed or fail based on your ability to market your services in business-to-business. If you're not comfortable working business to business, or if you would prefer to work with a residential client base, then you might want to consider pursuing opportunities in a different franchise industry.
  • Maintaining commercial lavatories requires hiring and supervising a staff of trained employees. However, since the employees are spread out over various locations, supervision can be a challenge. Make sure to ask your franchisor for pointers about how to adequately supervise a decentralized staff.
